What can you find on Sweden family holidays that you won't find anywhere else?
If you’re looking to reconnect as a family and get the children off screens and into the great outdoors, be it summer or winter, Sweden is the dream. Scandinavians tend to speak amazing English, are very laidback and everything here seems to run like clockwork, minimising the risk of stress so parents and children alike can get on and enjoy the holiday. An obvious family favourite is Swedish Lapland in winter, where you can enjoy a whole host of activities from dog-sledding and snow-shoeing to a snowmobile adventure in search of the Northern Lights, all in a beautiful Narnia-esque landscape. If you're travelling here in winter, a stay at the Ice Hotel, in a room made entirely of snow and ice, is one you and the children certainly won't forget.
But Lapland is not just for winter, head here in the summer for the chance to enjoy kayaking, walking, sailing, fishing and plenty more, with the added benefit of long daylight hours to pack in the activities. You could also hike through the forests with a guide to spot wildlife such as moose, reindeer, birds and bears.
Despite all this brilliance up north, there is more to Sweden than just Lapland; the capital city, Stockholm, being a prime example. The city is built on a series of islands and in the winter the sea can freeze solid, creating ample opportunities for ice skating. And in the summer you can go kayaking around the archipelago, exploring the 'Venice of the North' from the water. There are also some fantastic museums, our favourite being the Vasa Museum, home to the impressive 17th century Vasa ship, which sank on its maiden voyage and has since been impressively restored. Children with even the slightest interest in history will love it.
Another city favourite of ours is Gothenburg on the west coast, and from here you can explore another archipelago of 8,000 islands and stay in fishing villages along the coast of Bohuslan while sampling delicious fresh seafood, enjoying a seal safari and hiking, swimming and kayaking your way around the region. Quite simply we think this is one of the very finest family-friendly summer destinations in Europe.
So whether you want to explore Sweden as a winter wonderland or a summer paradise, our experts can put together a tailor-made family itinerary to suit you.
