Khorixas, the former capital of Damaraland, is located in north-western Namibia. Today, this is a small yet active hub with all the necessary services, including a hospital and a university campus. Khorixas makes the perfect stopover if you want to discover the wonders of the region such as the rock paintings and engravings of Twyfelfontein, which were created by the first Bushmen around 6,000 years ago; the petrified forest of Okameneli gozd, an impressive site with fossilised trunks dating back several million years; Vingerklip (or ‘Finger’s Rock’), a rock needle built up from sedimentary rock layers; or the Burnt Mountain,
a hill with a solidified lava flow at the foot of a seven-mile-long volcanic ridge.
