Lake Natron, just north of the Ngorongoro Crater, is most known for the very high alkaline level of its water, which makes it largely inhospitable to wildlife, however it is also one of the most beautiful lakes in Africa, partly thanks to the red-hue of the water, which is caused by the salt-loving microorganisms that live here. Explore the region in 4x4s or on camelback or walk across the immense landscape of the surrounding hills and volcanoes, where you will see a scattering of local wildlife. Staying in the Lake Natron region is also the perfect opportunity to admire the last active volcano
in the country – Mount Ol Donyo Lengai – which we recommend you climb. This climb is best done at dawn, so you can watch in wonder as the sun rises over the endless Tanzanian landscape.
