What can you find in Nyungwe National Park that you won't find anywhere else?
Tucked away in Rwanda’s southwest corner, Nyungwe National Park is home to one of Africa’s oldest rainforests. Thanks to its lengthy history, the region is incredibly rich in biodiversity and home to more than 1,000 species of wildlife. The breath-taking scenery welcomes seasoned hikers, who can explore the park by traversing one of the 13 hiking trails, spanning 80 miles across the forest floor.
With a number of rare primate species inhabiting the Nyungwe forest, colobus monkey tracking is a magical activity to include in your itinerary. Often found in groups of up to 300 monkeys, watch as the playful primates clamber through the rainforest canopy overhead. Chimpanzee trekking is another popular excursion and the perfect accompaniment to gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park.
Nyungwe’s forest canopy walk was the first of its kind to be created in East Africa and offers unparalleled views of the surrounding landscapes. At a height of 164ft above the ground, the walkway snakes its way through the treetops for 295ft, allowing you to get up close with the resident monkeys as they move through the foliage. Avid birders should pack their binoculars for their Nyungwe National Park holidays, as the park is home to over 300 bird species, with many of them endemic to the region, including Grauer’s Warbler, the Rwenzori Turaco and an array of sunbirds.
