If you’re in search of the perfect balance between bush and beach, this ten-day adventure to Botswana and Mozambique fits the bill for the whole family.

Embark on the ‘bush’ portion of your trip in the Okavango Delta; widely regarded as one of the best safari destinations in the world, the Delta is home to the Big Five, alongside some more unusual species, as well as breath-taking landscapes. Your expert guides will take you out on morning game drives in search of these wild and wacky creatures, and for an even more authentic safari experience, take to the waterways for a boat safari in a traditional mokoro canoe. Your evenings can be filled with delicious dinners beneath the stars, which even the fussiest of eaters are sure to enjoy.

Once you’ve discovered the wildlife world of the Okavango, head to Mozambique for some well-deserved beach relaxation. While lounging on the white-sands beaches and soaking up the sunshine are likely to top parents’ to-do lists here, restless children (and adults) can opt to snorkel, dive, kayak, fish and much more.

Route

Everything is 100% tailored to you
DAY 1

International Flight

Your overnight flight to Johannesburg leaves London in the evening, and takes nearly 11 hours, so make sure the children have got their personalised Sharky & George fun packs to hand, and that the iPads are fully charged.

DAY 2

Botswana Bound

Arrive in Johannesburg at breakfast time and transfer across to the onward two-hour flight to Maun in Botswana where you will arrive at lunchtime. Nearly there, but now it's time for one more light aircraft flight which will transfer the family directly to your lodge in the heart of the Okavango Delta. This is a fascinating scenic flight, and an excellent introduction to Botswana as it showcases some of the country's varied landscapes. Fly over the glistening Okavango Delta, which has to be seen from above to be truly appreciated. Keep your eyes peeled and the kids' spotting lists handy because you should be crossing a fair number of animals off simply on this flight!

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Okavango Delta is one of the best safari destinations in the world. With Big Five game, a multitude of smaller and rarer species, and endless stunning panoramas, this is a firm favourite of ours and we're sure you'll agree.

After arriving at your lodge the rest of the afternoon is yours to relax and settle into bush life with your first evening game drive and sundowner cocktails (and mocktails for the children).

DAYS 3 & 4

Days in the Delta

Wake up to the sound of the bush (and maybe some excitable children too!) You'll want to make the most of the day and get out on the early morning game drives so you have the best chance of seeing as many animals as possible. After the morning game drives, head back to camp for late breakfasts, dips in the pool and afternoon bush walks where the knowledgeable guides will have the kids on tracking duty, searching for game footprints and little bush creatures.

Alternatively, on one of the mornings, forgo the game drive in favour of a more authentic safari experience, heading out on a traditional mokoro dugout canoe, punted through the waterways by an expert guide. The children will adore the experience every bit as much as the parents.

After you're done exploring, it's back to the lodge for dinners and stargazing.

DAY 5

Last Day on Safari

This morning, after breakfast and perhaps a last morning stroll around the lodge, you will bid farewell to the team and your guide will transfer you back to the airstrip in time for your flight to Maun. From Maun airport catch a direct flight to Johannesburg where you'll spend the night. The flight is just under two hours long so you'll have the evening to see a little of this under-rated city - we can also recommend and book the perfect family friendly restaurant.

DAY 6

To Mozambique

After breakfast, make the short journey back to Johannesburg airport with your driver. There you'll board your two-hour flight to Vilanculos in Mozambique. On arrival, meet one of our team for the 45-minute drive to your hotel. After several days enjoying the lush scenery of the Okavango Delta, arriving on Mozambique's white sandy shores overlooking the turquoise waters of the Mozambique Channel will be quite the contrast. We've got no doubt that the kids will be stripped off and in the pool within seconds, and then the rest of the day is dedicated to simple pleasures such as sun, sea and sand.

DAYS 7 to 10

Beach Bliss

Spend the next four days enjoying the Mozambique coast and Bazaruto Archipelago as a family. Depending on which coastal lodge we've recommended and booked for you the activities on offer may differ, but chances are there will be snorkelling (and diving for older children), kayaking, bicycling, dhow sailing boat trips, fishing expeditions and (seasonally dependent) whale watching cruises available. Alternatively, treat yourselves to a spa treatment or two and really let the relaxation sink in. Suffice to say, you should never have to hear those fateful two words, 'I'm bored'.

Come the evenings, the catch of the day and fresh, flavourful food are on the menu, and stargazing while sipping on cool cocktails and mocktails/smoothies is on the agenda.

DAY 11

Home Time

Sadly, today it's time to leave your African paradise behind. After one last fun morning, make the drive back to Vilanculos airport and then catch your two-hour flight back to Johannesburg. From there you just need to connect onto the evening overnight flight back to the UK, which takes 11 hours.

DAY 12

Arrive Home

The flight arrives back into London in the early morning.
