San Cristóbal Island (or Chatham as the English called it) really packs a punch. As one of the oldest islands in the Galapagos, it’s not only the capital of the archipelago, but is also home to the largest fresh water lake – El Junco ¬– and is the first island Charles Darwin visited on his expedition to the area. For any budding naturalists and geologists, San Cristóbal is the Galapagos’ crown jewel. Its crimson Sesuvium landscape (an endemic plant species that changes colour depending on the season) and Peridot beaches are guaranteed crowd pleasers, while the waterfront bars and restaurants in
the port town provide the perfect antidote to a day spent snorkelling in Kicker Rock, surrounded by schools of hammerhead sharks, king angelfish, corals, and sponges. We haven’t forgotten about the Chatham mockingbird either. Endemic to the island, and one of the first species Darwin discovered on his arrival, they are worthy of many a photo (so don’t forget to pack one of our GoPros).
