Covering around 1.3million acres the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve is the largest protected area in the Mexican Caribbean. The UNESCO World Heritage Site has 23 known archaeological sites and is inhabited by over 100 mammal species and over 330 bird species as well as being a nesting site for two endangered species of sea turtle. The northern section of the park is thought to be an ancient trade route through the lagoons and mangroves between Tulum and Muyil.
