Formerly called Kompong Som (meaning ‘pleasant port’ in Khmer), Sihanoukville is Cambodia's only deep water port and a hugely popular seaside resort, often visited by Cambodians who come to enjoy the magnificent white sandy beaches for a weekend. Foreign tourists have flocked to Sihanoukville for its warm and relaxed atmosphere, its many small restaurants offering delicious cuisine and magnificent diving spots. As the area has become ever more popular with tourists, it has become more commercial and built up, however, despite losing some of its original charm, it remains an excellent jumping off point to explore the surrounding coastline.
A Sihanoukville holiday is an opportunity to get lost in the alleys of huge traditional markets, visit temples and organise a trip to Phnum Bokor National Park.
