Slovenia at a glance
Our travel guide to Slovenia starts in the capital, Ljubljana, which means ‘the beloved’. It won’t take long to see where the name came from as you wander the streets of the old town, or admire the view of the city and meandering river from the top of the fortress. In the evening, head in the direction of Metelkova, a former military barracks now converted into street art-clad gallery spaces, artists collectives and bars. Need a little serenity? Head to Lake Bled to recharge your batteries beside the lapis lazuli waters, and take a boat to the island in the middle of the lake that’s home to a charming Baroque church. Then climb to the castle to admire the whole picture perfect scene from above.
From high to low, go down into Postojna Cave to see stalactites, stalagmites and subtle plays of lights. Resume your journey (no two stops are ever more than a couple of hours apart in this diminutive destination) to enjoy freshly grilled fish on a terrace of the peninsula of Piran (known as the Slovenian Venice); sail along the Krka River; drive the switchbacks of to the Vrsic Pass; walk the beautiful trails of the Julian Alps, and finally ease your limbs by immersing yourselves in the mineralised waters of a luxury spa in the mountains.
