Southern Mozambique
Home to some of East Africa’s most stunning (and unspoilt) expanses of sand, Southern Mozambique holidays cater to those who long for complete serenity when planning a beach break. Dubbed Terra da Boa Gente (‘land of the good people’) by Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama, Southern Mozambique’s city of Inhambane boasts rich history and resplendent beauty in equal measure, ringed by coconut palms and golden beaches. The section of Indian Ocean which surrounds the port city possesses some of the world’s highest concentrations of rare marine life, including whale sharks, manta rays and highly endangered dugongs. With a bit of patience (and luck), you might be able to spot some of these underwater megafauna while diving in the turquoise waters. The town of Ponto do Ouro is blessed with a similarly charming name, meaning ‘tip of gold’ in Portuguese. So-called for the cape located at the edge of the town, it offers a gateway to the slice of paradisiacal coastline that stretches all the way to Inhaca Island.
Bazaruto Archipelago
Bazaruto Archipelago holidays are heaven for water babies and aquatic enthusiasts. Largely covered by a marine national park, the sea life which inhabits these exquisite aquamarine waters are well-protected and cared for. A stay in the town of Vilankulo is a good introduction to the archipelago (which is made up of a chain of four main islands) and dhow cruises embark from here, offering a scenic way to discover them all. Keep an eye out for dolphins diving alongside your boat or strap on some scuba diving gear for the chance to swim with bales of loggerhead turtles and shoals of colourful fish. Visit between June and September for near perfect dive conditions and warm, sunshine-filled days.
