On Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast, surrounded by dramatic coastal mountains and lapped by the gorgeous gin-clear waters of the Adriatic, the historic city of Split offers travellers a wonderful mix of city, culture and beach all rolled into one. Founded more than 1,700 years ago, Split is home to the grand remains of a palace that once belonged to one of the last Roman emperors, Diocletian. This UNESCO-listed palace is home to impressive, well-preserved ruins, and surrounded by the numerous cobbled alleyways of the old town where hidden restaurants and bars full of friendly locals beckon at every turn.
The city is also home to a bustling daily market, a pretty harbour and a vibrant nightlife, as well as some lovely beaches, ensuring that Split holidays have something to suit everybody. While Split is compact enough to be explored on foot, drive a little further out of the city and you’ll find yourself in the beautiful Krka National Park. Take the gentle walk around the main waterfalls and sights of the park, enjoying a picnic lunch along the way, or opt for one of the additional boat tours to see more of this vast lush park. After exploring the city and the surrounds, hop on a ferry to the nearby islands. Whether you choose Brac, Hvar, or some of the smaller Dalmatian Islands, you’re in for a treat. Beaches, old towns and seaside villages are waiting to be explored on foot, bicycle or car, and you can enjoy a day trip or turn it into a longer adventure with an overnight stay.
